Allergen extracts are used for skin prick tests.
A skin prick test (allergy test) is the fastest and most popular method of determining allergies. It allows you to determine exactly what types of allergens you are reacting to.
A skin test makes sense when you suspect an immediate type allergy, which is characterized by allergic rhinitis, asthma, urticarial or atopic dermatitis:
Even if all of your symptoms and history point to a specific allergen, your doctor should confirm your diagnosis and determine the exact cause of your allergy before treatment beginning. The skin prick test becomes the final criterion for differential diagnosis with the other diseases and other types of allergies. The type of allergic reaction is also determined.
The prick test is performed by an allergist in an ambulatory or stationary conditions at a public or private clinic.
The doctor drops microdoses of various allergens onto the skin, after which he or she lightly punctures the skin inside each drop with a special scarifier, providing a virtually painless injection.
The allergen penetrates the superficial layers of the skin and in allergies causes a skin reaction in the form of a small blister. which appears in 10-15 minutes and disappears on its own within an hour or faster. The more pronounced the blister, the clearer the indication of the allergy in question. If you are not allergic to the test allergen, nothing happens to the skin area concerned.
After the test, the result is evaluated after 20 minutes. The doctor checks the pricked skin area and notes which substance caused the redness and blister and the strength of the allergic reaction.
